Kelly Smerdon was born Sept. 11, 1984, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Smerdon graduated from Eden Prairie High School in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. She then attended Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota from August 2003 to July 2004. Smerdon attended Minnesota State University, Mankato from 2004 to 2008. Smerdon majored in Sociology and minored in Interdisciplinary Communications. Smerdon graduated May 2008 from the Department of Sociology and Corrections with a Bachelor of Science degree. In the interview, Smerdon talks about her reason for attending Minnesota State Mankato, where she met her closest friends, why she chose her major, and her overall college experience.

Shirley A. Grundmeier was born in July 26, 1924 in Mankato, Minnesota and died on April 27, 2018. She attended Mankato High School and after graduating in 1942, married and moved east. She was a secretary at Mankato’s West High’s audio visual center for 20 years. Grundmeier attended Mankato State University and graduated in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in music. In 1985 she received a master’s degree in music and in 1990, a master’s degree in theatre arts. Grundmeier married Winston Grundmeier in 1963. Her mother, brother, sister, and two grandchildren all graduated from Minnesota State University. She credits two professors as instrumental to her attending and completing college: Harry Fitterer and Marion Powers.

Description

Robert Leslie Graham was born in January 9, 1920 in Saratoga, Iowa and passed away on October 9, 2016 in Mankato. He graduated from high school in Riceville, Iowa in 1943 and was working for Hormel when he received a draft notice. Graham joined the U.S. Navy, trained to be a radio operator and was assigned to the USS Louisville. After his service he enrolled at Austin Community College. He transferred to Mankato State Teachers College and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor’s in chemistry, then completed a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota in 1954. He taught at Grandview College for a year before enrolling at the University of Virginia. Graham taught at DuPont in Virginia for a year and then at Virginia Tech for four years before joining the faculty at Mankato State College in 1964. He retired in 1989. Graham married Marie Payne Graham on June 15, 1957. They have one child.

Sandra J. Ready was born November 23, 1945 in Miami Beach, Florida. She graduated from Saint Louis Park High School in Saint Louis Park, MN in 1963 and began her higher education studies at the University of Minnesota. She transferred to Mankato State College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education and went on to teach high school English, speech, and journalism. She later completed a master’s degree in library media education, a specialist degree in curriculum and instruction, and a second bachelor’s degree from Mankato State University. Ready was a Mankato State University librarian and retired in 2002. Ready married Kirk Ready in July 1967 and they have two children, both Mankato State University alums.

Louis A. Schwartzkopf was born April 19, 1946 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in physics and the University of California, Berkley in 1974 with a doctoral degree in physics. He taught at Eastern Oregon State College before becoming a faculty member at Mankato State University in 1982. Schwartzkopf is married to Rebecca (Becky) Schwartzkopf and they have one daughter, Dorothy. He retired from Minnesota State University Mankato in 2010.

Sandra F. Parks was born September 16, 1934 near Corning, Iowa. She graduated high school in Cleghorn, Iowa in 1952. She moved to Mankato in 1966 when her husband, Richard Mitchell, became a faculty member at Mankato State University. She completed three degrees from Mankato State College: an elementary education undergraduate degree, a master’s degree through the College of Education with an emphasis on library, and a specialist degree also through the College of Education. Parks began working in the Mankato State College library in 1974 and retired June 1996. She married Richard Mitchell in 1954 and they have two children. Their daughter, Kathryn Woyda, attended Wilson Campus School and Mankato State University. Parks married James Parks in 2002.

The Leonard Kalakian collection consists of an audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Kalakian and Scott Fischer during the winter of 1985. Kalakian came to Mankato State College in 1965 to work as a professor of physical education. He began the interview by discussing his biographical information. The Geraldine Kline collection consists of an audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Kline and Julie Wolner during the autumn of 1985. The Jack L. Flinner collection contains an audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Flinner and Lance Lund during the fall of 1987. Flinner began his career as a physics professor at Wittenberg University (1957-1969). In 1969, he moved to Mankato, Minnesota and become a professor of physics at Mankato State College. According to Lund, Flinner noted “that the goals, objectives, duties, rewards, and frustrations have changed little during . . .” his career. However, Flinner believed that changes in the abilities of students and advances in technology altered the teaching methods available to professors. Furthermore, he touched upon Mankato State’s administration, organizations, professors and staff, along with the community of Mankato.

The Dr. John J. Janc collection consists of an audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and transcript for an oral history interview conducted between Janc and Tim Haen during the fall of 1987. Janc began his teaching career at Durand, Wisconsin in 1966. Following his experiences in the Durand school system, Janc traveled to France and eventually earned doctorate degrees in both France and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Janc became an assistant professor at Mankato State University in 1979 and by the time of the interview had been promoted to the position of associate professor. In the interview, Janc discussed his educational background, pedagogical changes in the teaching of foreign languages, and his experiences as a French teacher. While he mentioned his teaching duties at the secondary level, he focused mainly on his experiences at the university level.

Pietan worked as an art education professor at Mankato State College and University between 1965 and 1983.
