The Allen L. Wortman collection consists of an oral history interview conducted between Wortman and Anne Stenzel in June 2017. In this interview, Wortman talks about his career, friends, and experiences at Mankato State University as a Music Department faculty member from 1966 through 1995. Also included in this collection is a biographical form, a photograph of Wortman, and a listing of his theatre performances.
This oral history interview was conducted as part of the Tell Your MSU Story Oral History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Allen L. Wortman was born January 7, 1935 in Le Claire, Iowa. He attended Central College in Iowa for his bachelor’s degree where he majored in music and minored in German. He then attended the University of Northern Colorado for his masters and doctoral degrees in Music. In 1966, Wortman joined the faculty at Mankato State College and in 1969 he directed the Ellis Street Singers. From 1972 through 1976, Wortman served as the chair of the Music Department. Wortman directed many of the choral performances on campus before 1981, but this was when he became the director of the Concert Choir at Mankato State University. During his time at Mankato State University, Wortman was involved with 60 musicals, directed the Waseca Chorale, the Minnesota Valley Chorale, directed the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, and held 40 music contests. In addition to being the director, he also acted in plays and operas on campus. In 1991, Wortman retired from directing the Concert Choir, but continued to direct the Ellis Street Singers until 1995, when he retired from Minnesota State Mankato. Since retirement, Wortman has continued to be active with the Music Department at Minnesota State Mankato. He directs two choirs in Tucson, Arizona, where he spends winters. Wortman also works with the music for the community theater.
