Description

Robert Leslie Graham was born in January 9, 1920 in Saratoga, Iowa and passed away on October 9, 2016 in Mankato. He graduated from high school in Riceville, Iowa in 1943 and was working for Hormel when he received a draft notice. Graham joined the U.S. Navy, trained to be a radio operator and was assigned to the USS Louisville. After his service he enrolled at Austin Community College. He transferred to Mankato State Teachers College and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor’s in chemistry, then completed a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota in 1954. He taught at Grandview College for a year before enrolling at the University of Virginia. Graham taught at DuPont in Virginia for a year and then at Virginia Tech for four years before joining the faculty at Mankato State College in 1964. He retired in 1989. Graham married Marie Payne Graham on June 15, 1957. They have one child.

Sandra J. Ready was born November 23, 1945 in Miami Beach, Florida. She graduated from Saint Louis Park High School in Saint Louis Park, MN in 1963 and began her higher education studies at the University of Minnesota. She transferred to Mankato State College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education and went on to teach high school English, speech, and journalism. She later completed a master’s degree in library media education, a specialist degree in curriculum and instruction, and a second bachelor’s degree from Mankato State University. Ready was a Mankato State University librarian and retired in 2002. Ready married Kirk Ready in July 1967 and they have two children, both Mankato State University alums.

Kalakian came to Mankato State College in 1965 to work as a professor of physical education. He began the interview by discussing his biographical information. Additionally, he talked about salaries, hiring procedures, unions and faculty unity, morale, grading, the availability of physical education jobs, women’s athletics, communication skills, and teacher prestige.
This oral history interview was conducted as a requirement for a course entitled Introduction to College Teaching at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota.

In the interview, Kline, a professor in the Department of Business Education at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota, discussed the changes that occurred within the instruction of business education between 1953 and 1985. Furthermore, Kline noted changes and continuities in the areas of instruction, personal goals, duties, rewards, frustrations, professional organizations, and community expectations. The interview concluded with Kline providing advice for beginning business education teachers.

The Jean McCarthy collection consists of an audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between McCarthy and Norma McCarthy during the autumn of 1983. In the interview, Jean McCarthy, an Associate Professor of Physical Education at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota from 1962 through 1983, discussed the reorganization of Mankato State College in the early 1960s. He explained how and why the school shifted from being an institution devoted to the training of educators to becoming a college concerned with interdisciplinary programs and content specialties.
