Tom Zinselmeier conducted these interviews in October and November, 2017 to fulfill an internship project with the University Archives. He interviewed two (2) coaches and five (5) players who were a part of the Minnesota State University, Mankato football team. He conducted the interviews as part of the, “Tell Your MSU Story” program which looks to document the experiences of alumni, faculty, employees and students. This particular collection of interviews examines the experiences of football coaches and players at Minnesota State Mankato.

David Engen was born June 4, 1968, in Fridley, Minnesota. Engen graduated from high school and then attended Anoka-Ramsey Community College. He then attended Mankato State University from 1988 to 1990 where he majored in speech communication and business administration and was a member of the forensics team. After graduation, Engen entered the workforce for a short while and then attended Auburn University and received a master’s degree in 1992. Engen finished his education at Bowling Green State University where he received his doctorate degree in 1995. Engen has taught at Minnesota State University, Mankato since 2002. In this interview, Engen talks about his decisions to attend college and graduate school, his experiences as a student and as a faculty member at Minnesota State Mankato, and faculty members that stand out.

Ryan Schlichte was born on November 25, 1996 in Mankato, Minnesota. Mr. Schlichte has lived in Mankato his entire life. He attended Mankato West High School where he played football and baseball. Schlichte led the Mankato West football team to a state title during his time as the starting quarterback. Mr. Schlichte started attending Minnesota State University, Mankato in the fall of 2015 and majors in Social Studies Education. Schlichte is a member of the MSU football team and is the starting quarterback and has been getting playing time since his redshirt freshman year. During the interview he tried to provide a good overview of what MSU Football was all about and what his daily life is like. He was able to give a very detailed description of how the football team acts.

Ian James Pribyl was born on December 14, 1996 in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in South Milwaukee and attended South Milwaukee High School. Pribyl is part of the Minnesota State Mankato football team and plays running back where he has been getting playing time since his redshirt freshman year. Mr. Pribyl is also part of the Bio Medical Club due to him majoring in Bio Medical Sciences while at MSU. Spencer Gene Hermus was born on October 22, 1996 in Appleton, Wisconsin. Mr. Hermus lived in the Appleton area his whole life prior to attending MSU Mankato. He attended Kimberly High School where he won multiple state championships in football as a quarterback and safety. Mr. Hermus has attended MSU Mankato since the fall of 2015 and majors in bio medical sciences. He is also a part of the MSU football team where he plays safety. Brian Johnson was born Dec. 24, 1979, in Mankato, Minnesota. He graduated from Mankato East High School in Mankato, Minnesota in January 1999. He then lived in Minneapolis, Minn. and Denver and Colorado Springs, Colo., where he worked full-time and played in a band. Johnson then attended Minnesota State Mankato where he majored in mass communications with an emphasis in journalism and minored in speech communication. Johnson graduated Summa Cum Laude (with highest honor) December 2007 with a degree from the Department of Communications. In this interview, Johnson talks about why he chose Minnesota State Mankato, where he has worked while attending school, why he chose his major, his favorite professors, being a non-traditional student, being part of College Democrats, campus memories, academic career and program, time as an exchange student, writing for the Reporter, and plans after graduation.
