The Norman Pietan collection consists of an audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Pietan and Lee Chinghwa during the fall of 1987. Pietan worked as an art education professor at Mankato State College and University between 1965 and 1983. He had previous experiences working as an art teacher in a Maryland high school and as a faculty member at St. Cloud State and at Mills College in Oakland, California. In the interview, Pietan discussed his experiences as a professor of art education and the changes he witnessed during his career. Furthermore, he discussed his perceptions of Mankato and its inhabitants along with his understanding of the interactions between teachers, students, and community organizations.
This oral history interview was conducted as a requirement for the graduate level Educational Foundations course entitled History of Education in American Culture at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota.

The Dwain F. Petersen collection contains an audiocassette tape, a CD duplicate of the audiocassette, and transcript of an oral history interview conducted between Petersen and Francisca Beverly Epale during the fall of 1990. In the interview, Petersen discussed the changes that he observed while teaching in several rural communities and while serving as a professor and chairman of the Educational Foundations program at Mankato State University. The interview covers the period between 1955 and 1990.
This oral history interview was conducted as a requirement for the graduate level Educational Foundations course entitled History of Education in American Culture at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota.

The Patricia A. Longwell-Wera collection consists of a transcript, an audiocassette tape, and a CD duplicate of the audiocassette of an interview conducted between Longwell-Wera and Traci Rae Parent during the spring of 1990. In the interview, Longwell-Wera discussed her twenty-five year career as a professor of foreign language at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota. Specifically, she focused upon the changing relationships between faculty and administration caused in part from the Vietnam War, the economy, and the public’s changing political proclivities.
This oral history interview was conducted as a requirement for the graduate level Educational Foundations course entitled History of Education in American Culture at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota.

Louis A. Schwartzkopf was born April 19, 1946 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in physics and the University of California, Berkley in 1974 with a doctoral degree in physics. He taught at Eastern Oregon State College before becoming a faculty member at Mankato State University in 1982. Schwartzkopf is married to Rebecca (Becky) Schwartzkopf and they have one daughter, Dorothy. He retired from Minnesota State University Mankato in 2010.

William R. Bernhagen was born September 11, 1940 in Appleton, Wisconsin. After graduating from high school he worked for a few years in the textile mills and joined the U.S. military for two years. He was the first in his family to go on to higher education and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor’s degree in geography in 1968, the University of Iowa with a master’s degree in planning in 1970, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1974 with a doctoral degree in environmental planning and resource management. Bernhagen came to Mankato State University as a development officer in 1987. He also taught courses in the Urban and Regional Studies Institute for a few years before he retired in 2005. Bernhagen is married to Christine (Solberg) Bernhagen in 1967 and they have two children, Grant and Nissa. In this interview, Bernhagen talks about his family, his education, and his career at Minnesota State University Mankato in University Advancement and as a faculty member in the Urban and Regional Studies Institute.

Sandra J. Ready was born November 23, 1945 in Miami Beach, Florida. She graduated from Saint Louis Park High School in Saint Louis Park, MN in 1963 and began her higher education studies at the University of Minnesota. She transferred to Mankato State College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education and went on to teach high school English, speech, and journalism. She later completed a master’s degree in library media education, a specialist degree in curriculum and instruction, and a second bachelor’s degree from Mankato State University. Ready was a Mankato State University librarian and retired in 2002. Ready married Kirk Ready in July 1967 and they have two children, both Mankato State University alums.

Wisen on 1 November 1980. Brown was a faculty member at Mankato State University and taught Economics from 1957 to 1977. Robert Leslie Graham was born in January 9, 1920 in Saratoga, Iowa and passed away on October 9, 2016 in Mankato. He graduated from high school in Riceville, Iowa in 1943 and was working for Hormel when he received a draft notice. Graham joined the U.S. Navy, trained to be a radio operator and was assigned to the USS Louisville. After his service he enrolled at Austin Community College. He transferred to Mankato State Teachers College and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor’s in chemistry, then completed a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota in 1954. He taught at Grandview College for a year before enrolling at the University of Virginia. Graham taught at DuPont in Virginia for a year and then at Virginia Tech for four years before joining the faculty at Mankato State College in 1964. He retired in 1989. Graham married Marie Payne Graham on June 15, 1957. They have one child.

The Allen L. Wortman collection consists of an oral history interview conducted between Wortman and Anne Stenzel in June 2017. In this interview, Wortman talks about his career, friends, and experiences at Mankato State University as a Music Department faculty member from 1966 through 1995. Also included in this collection is a biographical form, a photograph of Wortman, and a listing of his theatre performances.
This oral history interview was conducted as part of the Tell Your MSU Story Oral History Project conducted by the Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

He then attended the University of Northern Colorado for his masters and doctoral degrees in Music. In 1966, Wortman joined the faculty at Mankato State College and in 1969 he directed the Ellis Street Singers. From 1972 through 1976, Wortman served as the chair of the Music Department. Wortman directed many of the choral performances on campus before 1981, but this was when he became the director of the Concert Choir at Mankato State University. During his time at Mankato State University, Wortman was involved with 60 musicals, directed the Waseca Chorale, the Minnesota Valley Chorale, directed the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, and held 40 music contests. In addition to being the director, he also acted in plays and operas on campus. In 1991, Wortman retired from directing the Concert Choir, but continued to direct the Ellis Street Singers until 1995, when he retired from Minnesota State Mankato. Since retirement, Wortman has continued to be active with the Music Department at Minnesota State Mankato. He directs two choirs in Tucson, Arizona, where he spends winters. Wortman also works with the music for the community theater.

David Engen was born June 4, 1968, in Fridley, Minnesota. Engen graduated from high school and then attended Anoka-Ramsey Community College. He then attended Mankato State University from 1988 to 1990 where he majored in speech communication and business administration and was a member of the forensics team. After graduation, Engen entered the workforce for a short while and then attended Auburn University and received a master’s degree in 1992. Engen finished his education at Bowling Green State University where he received his doctorate degree in 1995. Engen has taught at Minnesota State University, Mankato since 2002. In this interview, Engen talks about his decisions to attend college and graduate school, his experiences as a student and as a faculty member at Minnesota State Mankato, and faculty members that stand out.
