Title: Gilbert Trafton
Description: Trafton was born in Maine January 9, 1874. He Attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut where he received a bachelor’s in philosophy in 1898 and a Master of Science degree in 1901. He earned a Master of Arts degree at Columbia University in 1911. Before coming to Mankato he first taught at Beaver College in Pennsylvania and then at East Greenwich, R. I. Academy, at the state normal school at Randolph, VT and at Passaic, N. J. High School. Trafton came to Mankato Normal School in 1911. He taught Physiography, the advanced study of physical geography, agricultural nature studies and preparation of students to teach elementary and nature sciences in public schools. He retired in 1943. He died in Mankato on October 31, 1943.

Title: Grace Armstrong
Description: Grace Armstrong was born in Faribault county, Minnesota and after high school in Blue Earth taught at rural schools in Minnesota. She attended Winona State Teachers College and received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts from the University of Minnesota. She began teaching at Mankato State Teachers College in 1927 and continued until her retirement in 1963. She specialized in elementary education and rural studies and served for many years as the chairman of the State Committee on teacher education and professional standards.

Description: Construction began on the English-Education Building in 1963 and instructors conducted the first classes in the Fall of 1964. On December 18, 1967 the State College Board voted to name the building after Grace Armstrong. Armstrong was a long time professor in Education. She served the campus community from 1927 until 1963.

Title: Maurice Nelson
Description: Maurice Nelson was born in Hutchinson, Minnesota and after contracting polio changed his career plans from farmer to teacher. He attended the Mankato Normal School for one year before completing his Bachelor of Science from Stout Institute in Menominee, Wisconsin. Nelson returned to Mankato and taught Industrial Arts in the Normal School, Teachers College and College from 1918-1959. He also served as Dean of Men from 1925 until his retirement in 1959.
