Woman looking at an 8500 pound granite monument recognizing the location of the hanging of 38 Dakota Indians at the conclusion of the US-Dakota War. The monument reads "HERE WERE HANGED 38 SIOUX INDIANS DEC.26TH 1862." After the war Henry Sibley tried 392 prisoners and sentenced 303 to death. President Abraham Lincoln reduced the number of Dakota Indians sentenced to hanging for their participation in the US-Dakota war from 303 down to 38. This image was taken 1964-12-01. This monument was originally located on the corner of Front and Main Streets in Mankato and was removed in 1971. In 1997, Reconciliation Park in Mankato was dedicated to mark the location of the largest mass execution in U.S. history where 38 Dakota Indians were hanged by the government.
