A picture of the 1988 Mankato State University Homecoming queen enjoying refreshments with a cheerleader and the MSU mascot "Stomper." The MSU mascot became Stomper in 1977 when the school formally chose the name "Mavericks." The name "Maverick" was submitted by Sociology Professor Roy Cook.
